Attic Insulation Edmonton

The attic is where an Edmonton home wins or loses the winter.

New Construction and Retrofit

In new construction we foam the roof deck before drywall, turning the attic into conditioned space. In retrofits we assess the existing insulation, remove damaged material where needed, seal air leaks in the attic floor and bring the whole assembly up to the R-value an Alberta winter demands.

More Than Warmth

Spray foam's airtight seal also keeps out dust and noise, and fireproofing applications add protection where code or peace of mind requires it. Wondering what your attic needs? Our insulation contractors will assess it free, call (587) 802-3628.

Edmonton Asks More of an Attic Than Almost Anywhere

The temperature difference across an Edmonton ceiling runs for months at a stretch and reaches extremes most of this country never sees. Every gap in the ceiling plane is working against the house continuously through that, and the dominant path is air moving through penetrations: around pot lights, at top plates, through plumbing chases and an unsealed attic hatch. Material lying above those gaps slows heat transfer while leaving the air exchange untouched.

Attic Frost Is the Local Symptom

Warm moist indoor air escaping into a cold attic condenses on the underside of the roof sheathing and freezes there. Through a long winter that accumulates, and when it finally thaws it runs down and presents as a roof leak. Homeowners call roofers; the cause is air and moisture escaping through the ceiling. Sealing the ceiling plane and getting ventilation right is what stops it recurring.

Roof Deck or Attic Floor

Insulating the attic floor keeps the attic outside the envelope and suits a simple, well-vented, empty attic. Insulating at the roof deck brings the whole volume inside the envelope, which is the stronger answer where mechanical equipment or ductwork sits up there, where the attic is partly finished, or where it is used for storage. Equipment running in an unconditioned Edmonton attic is fighting the house every minute it operates.

What the Finished Work Should Show

Depth measured and photographed where loose material went in. Consistent thickness across a roof deck where foam was applied, including the runs at the eaves where coverage slips most easily. Baffles in place where airflow has to be maintained. The attic hatch sealed and insulated. Penetrations sealed before anything was laid over them.

Questions

Common questions

Is attic insulation worth it in Alberta?

Yes. The attic is where most Alberta homes lose the most conditioned air, so it is usually the highest-payback area to insulate.

Do you remove the old attic insulation first?

Where the old material is settled, damp or damaged, it comes out before the new insulation goes in, and we quote that step up front.

How long does an attic project take?

Most residential attics are completed in a single day.
